How to Create your Own Birth Stone & Diamond Engagement Rings
-
1
Choose your metal. You can have rings made from 10K white gold, 10K yellow gold, sterling silver, or platinum. The deciding factor will be your taste in color and your pocketbook. The least expensive is sterling silver, while the most expensive is platinum.
-
2
Decide on your stones. If you are creating a birthstone ring, every jewelry store will have a chart on both the traditional and modern stones designated for every month. You may wish to have multiple stones with a birthstone set among other colored stones representing your children, as in a mother's ring, or for other loves ones, you may decide to add a few decorative clear stones to enhance the look of the central stone. These can be made of cubic zirconia or another less expensive material.

For a diamond engagement ring, choose a diamond with the four 'c's'---color, cut, clarity, carat weight. You may wish to have a number of smaller diamond "chips" or squared "baguettes" surrounding the central diamond.
-
4
Find an attractive setting for the stones. Beautiful jewelry is a combination of features that blend well together, so take your time and try a variety of settings to match the stone. Jewelry stores have a number of catalogs available to help you make the right selection.
-
5
Have the stones and setting assembled to your design. Make sure you are using a qualified jeweler with a good reputation. Examine the ring carefully when it is completed. Check to see that the assembly is fitted together properly and that no scratches have been made on stones during the process. The prongs that hold the stone should fit snugly and evenly, and it should not "catch" on threads when you draw the face of the stone against clothing.

Tips & Warnings
Some colored stones look better with yellow gold, while other match better with silver metals.
Clean and examine your ring regularly. If there is any looseness of stones or bending of the prongs that hold the stones, take it to a jeweler for repair.
