How to Dye Satin Material
Satin is a fabric that is made from silk. Because of the smooth feel and look of the fabric, it is often consider very luxurious. Many dresses and bed sheets are made of satin. Because satin is made from silk, it can be easily dyed. However, it is best to start with white or a lighter color to achieve almost any color. If you want the satin to be dyed navy, dark green, brown or burgundy, you can start with a darker color satin.
Things You'll Need
- Powdered dye
- Hot water
- Large bucket
- Washing machine
- Detergent
- 1 cup chlorine bleach

Start your washing machine and set it on the hottest water setting. Fill the machine with enough water for the material to move around in the water freely.

Pour the packet(s) of powder dye into hot water in a large bucket. Stir the contents to ensure the powder dissolves. Add the liquid dye to the washing machine.

Pre-soak the satin material in hot water. Place the material into the washing machine.

Adjust the washing machine so that it is set on an extended wash. Dye the satin material in the washing machine for at least 30 minutes before the rinse cycle starts.

Remove the satin material from the washing machine. Soak the material under warm water and then gradually to cooler water. When the water runs clear, the satin material will be completely finished.

Put the satin material in the dryer to dry it. If the material should not be placed in the dryer, hang it to dry.

Clean the washing machine to prevent staining. Fill the machine back up with hot water; add regular detergent and one cup of bleach. Run the machine for a complete cycle.
