Catch more fish with fresh line on an Abu Garcia Black Max reel.

The Abu Garcia Ambassadeur Black Max is a medium-duty baitcasting reel designed for freshwater fishing. The spool can hold approximately 160 yards of 12-lb. monofilament fishing line, according to the manufacturer. Line capacity increases with smaller-test monofilament. Respooling the Black Max with new fishing line at the start of the season can mean fewer lost fish due to line breaks. New line is also less prone to snarls and snags.

Instructions

    • 1

Disengage the spool-lock lever on the side of the reel to unlock the spool. Pull off the old line and discard.

    • 2

Insert the end of the new line through the black and chrome line-guide hole in the front of the reel.

    • 3

Pull the line through from the back of the line guide, pushing it under and around the spool.

    • 4

Tie the line to the spool using a clinch knot. The Animated Knots website (see Reference below) provides an illustration of the clinch knot. Clip the excess line with a pocket knife or wire cutter.

    • 5

Turn the spool-lock lever on the side of the reel to the locked position and begin cranking the reel handle clockwise to add fresh line to the Black Max. The line guide will slide back and forth along the front of the spool to ensure the line rolls evenly onto the spool.

    • 6

Fill to the mark on the inside edge of the housing around the spool, then cut the line and tie a snap swivel to the end. Clip the swivel to the side of the Black Max reel or to one of the line guides if the reel is mounted on a rod.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't overfill the reel with line, which can cause a backlash. A backlash occurs when the line uncoils from the reel faster than the spool is spinning, casuing the fishing line to wrap itself backwards around the spool in a tangle.
