How to Use a Fan to Improve Heat From a Wood Stove

How to Use a Fan to Improve Heat From a Wood Stove thumbnail
Wood stove and hot seat

The heat from a wood burning stove is radiated from the iron fire box into the room where it's mounted. The efficiency of this radiated heat is relatively low when compared to gas systems using radiator grills. Fans made for wood stoves are designed to extract more heat from a stove surface, or move heat from the room containing the stove to other rooms in the house. Put a fan or combination of fans to work around your wood burning stove to get more heat while burning less wood. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Place electric fans in the doorways of the room containing the wood burning stove. Turn the fans to blow air into the adjacent rooms to carry stove heat from room to room.

    • 2

Use air return grills with a fanned duct system to transfer wood stove heat to other rooms. Position the grill for outgoing air close to the ceiling. Rout the ducts through nearby rooms to radiate collected stove heat in the same way a stove pipe does. Send the air back into the room with the stove through a grill close to the floor.

    • 3

Use self-powered fans to draw more heat out of wood stoves. Place a heat sink, or steam powered type fan on, or over the wood stove to speed up the heat radiating effect of the wood burning stove body. The fan will circulate the excess heat released throughout the room.
