How Do I File for a Lost Title in Wisconsin?

The title to your automobile proves ownership, and it allows you to trade and/or sell your vehicle. You should always keep important papers, such as the title to your vehicle, where you won't misplace or forget where you put them. If the title to your vehicle has been misplaced, lost or stolen, you need to file for a duplicate title in Wisconsin, which will void all other titles.

Instructions

    • 1

File for a duplicate title in person by filling out an application or download an application from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation website. On the application you will need to include your Social Security number and/or Wisconsin driver's license number and the vehicle identification number (VIN number). When all portions of the application are complete, sign the application.

    • 2

Pay the fees required to obtain your duplicate title. The fee is $20; and if you are filing at the DMV, there is an additional $5 fee for counter service. You can pay by cash, check or money order. If you file in person, you will have the title in hand when you leave; if you mail in for your title, it will take several days to receive.

    • 3

Place the title where you will not misplace it and where it is safe, perhaps in a safe deposit box or a fire-proof storage container at home.
