How to Design Your Own Cat House

If you have an outdoor cat, or are providing homes for feral cats, then design them a house that will give them a place to get out of inclement weather. A cat house is not really any different from a small dog house. Use the basic dog house shape and design, sized for a cat. If you have experience building with wood, you can make the cat house based on your design. If not, consider buying a pre-built cat house, which can be found online.

Instructions

1. Start with a basic dog house design, a cubical house environment with a peaked roof. Plan to use cedar wood for the project as cedar will help keep out fleas.

2. Design a smaller door that would typically be used on a dog house. For a cat house, use a small square or even a round opening that the cat will slip through. Cats like cozy openings.

3. Optionally, add a clear plastic door flap to the opening.

4. Cover the roof with shingles to weatherproof it. Seal the cedar planks to protect them from water damage. Line the inside of the house with indoor/outdoor carpet. With these things considered, the designing stage is finished.
