How to Get a Boiler Operator's License
Boiler operators operate, repair and maintain heat and air-conditioning; refrigeration; and ventilating systems within large buildings. These workers also maintain the power and systems in industrial plants. According to the May 2008 U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Wages and Employment data, stationary engineers and boiler operators earned a national average salary of $49,790. The BLS reveals that employment is projected to grow more slowly than average at a rate of 5 percent through 2018.

Meet experience requirements for your state. Some jobs offer on-the-job training. The BLS reveals that many job openings require employees to be licensed before they begin work. On the other hand, some jobs offer apprenticeships. Many boiler operators begin careers in mechanic or helper job positions and receive on-the-job training by experienced engineers. Formal apprenticeships are also offered by The International Union of Operating Engineers, which last 4 years and include 6,000 hours of on-the-job training, as well as 600 hours of classroom education.
