Make a felt collar for your stuffed dog.

So your child has a favorite stuffed dog toy, or you've just finished making a stuffed dog toy, and the toy needs a collar for a finishing touch. Using a real dog collar may not be practical, as real dog collars are often of thick leather which may be too heavy for the toy to support. So instead, make a simple collar for your stuffed dog. All you need is some felt and a buckle, both of which can be found at fabric stores.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the felt into 2 rectangular strips. The actual dimensions will vary based on the size of your stuffed dog. So measure around the neck and use that measurement, plus an extra two to three inches for overlap, for the length of the collar. For the width, use anywhere from 1/2 inch to 1 1/2 inches. The smaller the toy, the narrower the collar. For really big stuffed toys, use the wider measurement.

    • 2

Lay the two rectangles on top of each other. This is because collars are typically made using a double thickness. Sew around the edges, sewing the top stitch 1/4 to 1/2 inches in from the side. Again, the thicker the collar, the farther inside you can make the top stitch. Narrower collars will have the stitching closer to the edge.

    • 3

Fold one end of the collar around the buckle's bar and hand sew the buckle into place.

    • 4

Cut a small rectangle out of felt that is twice as long as the collar is wide and is about 1/4 inch wide itself. Wrap this around the collar, a little behind the buckle and hand sew it into place on the back side of the collar. This is the strap that holds the end of the collar.

    • 5

Punch holes through the other end of the collar, along a center line. You can use an ice pick to punch the holes.

    • 6

Place the collar around the stuffed dog's neck. Push the buckle's tongue through the hole that fits the best to hold the collar into place. Tuck the end of the collar through the holding strap behind the buckle.
