How to Change the Ribbon on a Smith Corona Wordsmith Typewriter
Typewriters have not yet gone the way of the Dodo bird; only manual and electric typewriters are increasingly hard to come by these days. Electronic typewriters like the Smith Corona Wordsmith series remain in common use for office tasks that require only typing and minimal word processing. Such machines are not only easy to use but also easy to maintain. Changing the Smith Corona Wordsmith typewriter ribbon cassette, for instance, is the work of a moment. The procedure is identical for all Wordsmith models.

1
Purchase a typewriter ribbon for the Smith Corona Wordsmith electronic typewriter. The same ribbon will work with any 100, 150, 200 or 250 model.
-
2
Press the BACKSPACE key or SPACE bar to shift the print carrier to the center of the platen (i.e., the typewriter roller). Consult the Smith Corona Wordsmith manual for labeled illustrations of the typewriter's components.
-
-
3
Hold the ribbon cassette on both sides and lift the cassette by pulling upward, first on the front of the cassette, the side with the ribbon visible and facing the platen.
-
4
Insert the rear of the replacement cassette on the print carrier. Slowly press down on the front side of the cassette until it clicks firmly into place. If it does not easily snap into position or seems misaligned, carefully remove the cassette as you removed the original cassette and repeat the snap-in procedure.
-
5
Wind the ribbon-feed knob counterclockwise until the ribbon of the new cassette is taut.
-
6
Press the CODE key (code function key) and equal sign [=] key (SETTING key) to reinitialize your Smith Corona Wordsmith typewriter.
