1
Select a date for the birthday party. Although you may want to have the party on your child's birthday, the date may not work out for the guests. If your child's birthday is not during the summer, you will have to take school and sport schedules into consideration. Pick a weekend date for the party.

2
Find a location. Holding the party at your house is the cheapest option. You may want to choose an alternative location depending on the weather. Hold the birthday party at the park to play outdoor activities, or take the children to a train museum and then have the party at a restaurant. Book a location at least a month in advance to ensure that you have enough room for your guests.

3
Send out the invitation at least 4 weeks ahead of time. Make your own train invitations by designing tickets to board the train for the party. The tickets may read "All Aboard the Train for David's Birthday Party." The address can be the name of the station, and list your child as the conductor.

Prepare the food and beverages. Serve carrots and celery sticks by turning them into train cross tracks that lead to a bowl of vegetable dip. Serve snacks in clean engineer hats, cut cookies into train shapes and have a cake prepared with a train theme. Serve beverages with names like "Conductor's Brew" for punch served with ice cream.

Make the decorations. Build a fictional train in your backyard with large empty boxes. Paint the boxes different colors, and cut out holes for the windows. Hang up banners with train messages like "Welcome to the Train Station." You also can make train tracks from butcher paper, and place them in the entryway of the room.
-
6
Provide entertainment for the train party. Play games like "The Conductor Says" instead of "Simon Says." You also can turn musical chairs into a train theme by blowing on a conductor's whistle when guests need to find a seat. Award the guests with train favors like train whistles, cartoon train DVDs and toy trains.
