It is easy to lose your email information to viruses, computer crashes or other unfortunate events. The best way to avoid this is to back up your email messages, address book, mail accounts and newsgroup accounts. By following these steps, designed for a beginning to intermediate computer user, you can make sure that your messages will be safe even if your computer fails.

Instructions

  1. How to Back Up Your Message Files

      Open Microsoft Outlook Express 6. Click on "Tools > Options."

      Locate and click on the "Maintenance" tab. Click "Store Folder."

      Locate the "Store Location" dialog box. Move the mouse to one end of the box, under "Your Personal Message Is Located In The Following Folder."

      Click and drag the mouse across the "Your Personal Message Is Located In The Following Folder" box. Press "CTRL + C."

      Click "Cancel" twice.

      Return to your main desktop and click on "Start." Click "Run."

      Press "CTRL + V." Click "OK."

      Locate the "Edit" menu and click on "Select All."

      Locate the "Edit" menu again and click on "Copy." Close the window.

      Locate and right-click on an empty area of your PC desktop. Click "New > Folder."

      Choose a folder name, like "Email backup" and type it in. Press "Enter."

      There will now be a folder on your desktop named "Email backup" (or whatever you chose as a name). Double-click the folder.

      Right-click inside the window that you just opened. Click "Paste."

    How to Back Up Your Address Book

      Click on "File > Export > Address Book" in Outlook Express 6.

      Click "Browse." Choose the "Email backup" folder (or, again, whatever you named the folder from before). Type "Address book backup" or whatever you want to name this folder In the box labeled "File Name." Click "Save."

      Click "Next." Click on the boxes next to each section you want to save. Click "Finish."

      Click "OK," then "Close."

    How to Back Up Your Mail Account

      Click "Tools > Accounts" in Outlook Express 6.

      Locate the "Mail" tab. Click on the account you want to back up. Click "Export."

      Find the "Save In" box. Choose the "Email backup" folder from before. Click "Save," then "Close."

    How to Back Up Your Newsgroup Account
