Coin hip scarves are an essential belly dancing costume item, providing additional movement and sound to the dance being performed. These hip scarves can be found in almost any specialty dance store. However, store-bought coin scarves are not only expensive, they also usually come in limited sizes. Fortunately, it is a simple task for any plus-size belly dancer to make her own coin hip scarf. With the proper materials and basic sewing skills, an inexpensive homemade belly dancing hip scarf is easily within reach.

Things You'll Need

  • Chiffon fabric
  • Fabric scissors
  • Sewing machine
  • Thread
  • Coin fabric trim

Instructions

      Cut out a triangular piece of chiffon that is 12 inches tall in the middle and 12 inches wider than the circumference of the hips at the base.

      Fold over the edges of the fabric 1/2 inch and sew the folds in place, tucking the raw edges of the the fabric under the seam as you go.

      Cut a piece of coin trim that is long enough to wrap around all of the triangle's edges. Sew the trim all along the edges of the triangle.

      Finish off the scarf by sewing the two ends of the coin trim together.
