Instructions

  1. Floral Centerpiece

    • 1

Mix cool water and a few drops of dish detergent. Clean the inside and the outside of the white clay pots with a soft cloth soaked in the soapy water. Allow the pots to dry for several hours.

    • 2

Gather flowers that work well with your wedding colors or have a special meaning. For instance, the stephanotis flower symbolize a happy marriage. More traditional choices include red roses, which symbolize love and the blue hyacinth which is a symbol of constancy.

    • 3

Paint the names of the couple and the date of the wedding on each pot. Use a small brush and acrylic paint in the wedding's colors. Allow the paint to dry for a few hours before arranging the flowers.

    • 4

Fill the bottom of the pot with florist clay. This will help give weight to the pot so it will not tip over.

    • 5

Place the flower with the largest bloom and the longest stem into the center of the pot by shoving the end of the stem into the clay.

    • 6

Place the rest of the flowers around the largest bloom in the center and working your way toward the lip of the pot.

    • 7

Scatter green foliage and wisps of baby's breath in with the flowers to give the bouquet a fuller look.

    • 8

Place the centerpieces on the tables. Complete a card that states the flowers used in the centerpieces and their specific meaning. Place this card next to the arrangements for the guests to read.

    Fish Centerpiece

    • 9

Clean out a small to medium-sized fish bowl with water and liquid dish detergent. Allow the bowl to dry.

    • 10

Fill the bottom of the bowl with marbles or rocks that are the same color as the couple's wedding colors.

    • 11

Fill the the bowl with water and two goldfish, one to symbolize the bride and the other the groom.

    • 12

Place the fish bowl onto a charger plate or a glass tray. Place two tea candles on either side of the bowl on the tray or next to the tray onto the table.

    • 13

Light the candles at the beginning of the reception to help illuminate the bowls. Place a single-use bag of fish food near the bowl and encourage the children to feed the fish and to take these centerpieces home as a memento of the event.

Tips & Warnings

  • Paint brown clay pots white if you cannot locate white pots.

  • Keep the centerpieces refrigerated until the day of the wedding.

  • Remove any thorns from the flowers, if applicable.

  • Do not allow the guests to overfeed the fish, which could lead to the fish's untimely death.
