How to Plan a Raffle
A raffle fund-raiser can be an excellent way to raise money for your organization. If you are able to find donations for your prizes, the costs of a raffle are rather low, which means that you can make a big profit. Still, planning a raffle does take some time and energy--you have to put in the work to get prizes and sell tickets to have a successful raffle. With a network of volunteers, you can make light work.

1
Research the raffle laws in your state. Each state has its own laws governing raffles. For example, some states require a special license in order to hold a raffle drawing. Understanding the laws in your state will help you to avoid legal trouble.

2
Brainstorm sources for prizes. The prizes that you offer in your raffle will play a big role in how many tickets you can sell. If you can offer a big prize--such as electronics, vacations or cash, then you'll sell more tickets. However, purchasing these prizes will eat into your profits. Make a list of potential donors who you can ask for prize donations. Local business owners are typically a good source.

3
Decide what type of ticket you'll use. One style is the traditional raffle ticket pictured in this article. These tickets come in rolls with two tickets per number. You give the ticket buyer one copy of the ticket and put the other into the ticket barrel. Alternatively, you can print out small tickets that people fill out with their name and contact information, a style that's ideal for a raffle where the winner doesn't have to be present to win.

4
Calculate the cost of the tickets. A high ticket price may discourage people from buying it, but if you price your tickets too low you won't make as much profit. If all of your prizes are donated, you can charge a low price for the tickets. Be aware, though, that people will pay a larger per-ticket fee if you have big prizes. The chance to win a car or a European vacation, for example, is worth more than the chance to win a $25 gift certificate. Consider bulk discounts as well.

5
Plan how to sell the tickets. You can go door-to-door, sell tickets at an event or post fliers up around town. Think about the ways that people might respond best and how you can get the tickets into their hands.
