How to Replace a Windshield Wiper Pump

How to Replace a Windshield Wiper Pump thumbnail
Windshield wiper fluid can't clean your windshield if your wiper pump is broken.

Keeping a car's windshield clean is important. In dirty environments, the small pump that distributes windshield washer fluid works overtime. This can cause wear and tear on the pump, and it could eventually break. In cold climates, windshield washer fluid can freeze and expand inside the pump, causing irreparable damage. If your windshield wiper pump breaks, you can change the pump at home simply and save an unnecessary mechanic's bill.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the reservoir. Pull upward, and the reservoir should pop out. Hardware is rarely used to keep it in place.

    • 2

Remove the electrical connector from the fluid pump under the reservoir. Pull the connector off by hand.

    • 3

Remove the hose between the reservoir and the pump. Loosen the hose clamp with a screwdriver.

    • 4

Take out the bolts that attach the pump to the car frame. Remove the pump.

    • 5

Bolt the new pump to the frame. Replace everything in reverse order.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure to place any removed hardware in a safe place. Working under the hood of a car is tricky, and hardware that falls into an engine bay can get lost easily.
