How to Change the Hard Drive in an IBM Thinkpad
Hard drives need replacing when your system crashes and fails. You might also want to change out your hard drive to increase drive capacity. It's best to make a complete backup of data before attempting any changes to your hard drive. However, hardware failure may prevent you from doing so, and you may require data extraction from a trusted source. Whatever the reason you want to swap out drives, the process is relatively straightforward. A screwdriver is all that's required for the physical work.

1
Disconnect any Ethernet, printer and other cables and the AC adapter from the computer. Turn the ThinkPad over with the base facing upwards. Note the two battery latches. Slide each of them to the left, first the one above the battery and then the one to the left of the battery. Keep squeezing the latches while pulling the battery out in order to remove it. Use the same technique if your computer only has one latch.

2
Locate the single screw on the back of the computer that holds the hard drive in place. Use a flat screwdriver to remove it. Stand the computer on its side with the hard drive faceplate facing upwards. Hold the sides of the hard drive, and gently rock it side to side to pull it out. Detach the removable cover from the hard drive.

Attach the same cover to the new hard drive by slipping it onto the edge and using the reverse process as above. Insert your replacement hard drive into the slot. Make sure you have a proper connection when you hear it click into place. Use the screw and screwdriver to secure the hard drive in place.
