How to Convert RM Files to WMV Files
RM is a Real Media extension created for the RealPlayer media player. Files with the RM extension can contain video information, audio information or both; or the file can contain only a link that directs RealPlayer to a streaming audio or video file that is stored on a website. While RM files are commonly used on the Internet for storage, they are not widely supported in media players aside from RealPlayer. If you would like to change your RM files to a more standard video file type, such as WMV, it can be easily done online.

Launch a web browser and enter the URL of a website that offers a media-converting system. Websites with free media-converting systems include YouConvertIt and Media Converter (see Resources.)

Load your video into the online media-converting system by clicking "Browse" or "Upload a video." When the browsing window pops up, go to the folder on your hard drive that contains the RM file, scroll to the file name and double-click the file to load it into the converter.

Type in the email address where you would like the converted file to be sent if an email box is provided, such as on YouConvertIt. If an email box is not provided--as on Media Converter--the file downloads are provided directly in the converter once the file is finished converting.

Choose the output file or "Convert To" type for your file conversion by clicking on the arrow next to the drop-down menu. The WMV format is usually listed as just "WMV" or "Windows Media Video."

Click "Convert" or "OK" in the file conversion system to start converting the file. A progress window opens on the screen and displays the progress of the conversion or the uploading of the file into the system. Do not close the browser window while this box is on the screen.

Download the file when the conversion is complete. On Media Converter, the download links are provided in the conversion window. With YouConvertIt, the download link is emailed to the address that you entered in the email box.
