How to Remove a Starter From a 1994 Toyota 4Runner

The starter motor on a Toyota 4-Runner does a lot of heavy work. The small electric motor is responsible for physically turning the large engine by itself, and does so reliably for thousands of starts. Eventually though, it will fail and when it does, it's typically all of a sudden. Replacing the starter seems like an intimidating process, but it's fairly easy and just takes a little bit of precaution to do properly.

Things You'll Need

• Open-end wrench set
• 3/8-inch ratchet, extension and socket set

Instructions

1. Pop the hood. Undo the terminal from the negative post on the battery using an open-end wrench, then do the same for the terminal on the positive post.

2. Locate the starter on the passenger side of the engine block. Disconnect the connections on the end of the starter with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Unplug the harness leading to it as well.

3. Unbolt the bottom bolt on the starter using the 3/8-inch ratchet, extension and sockets. Then place one hand on the starter and use the other to remove the top bolt on the starter with the ratchet.

4. Carefully lower the starter away from the engine and out from under the vehicle.
