How to Create a Torrent File

Torrent files are used by BitTorrent clients such as uTorrent, Azureus or BitComet to facilitate file sharing. According to the official BitTorrent website, BitTorrent allows files to be distributed among users quickly by uploading completed portions of a download to other users while downloading is still in process. Since BitTorrent is an open file sharing platform, most BitTorrent clients allow you to create .torrent files to be uploaded to torrent sites and downloaded by other users.

Instructions

    • 1

Open your preferred BitTorrent client on the computer containing the files or folders you want to share with a .torrent file. Click “File” and then choose “Create a New Torrent.”

    • 2

Click “Add a File” if the item you want to share is a single file. Choose “Add a Directory” if you want to share several files from a single folder. Navigate to the directory and select the file or folder you want to add to your .torrent file. Click “Add” or double-click the file or folder to add it to your .torrent file.

    • 3

Input the URL of the torrent tracker your .torrent file will use. Locate the torrent tracker's URL by reviewing the requirements of the website to which you intend to upload the saved .torrent file.

    • 4

Type a comment for the .torrent file. Use the comment to describe the contents of the file or to provide instructions for the use of the .torrent file.

    • 5

Select whether the torrent tracker you specified is a private or public torrent tracker. Use the private tracker if the site to which you will upload the .torrent requires users to register to download and access .torrent files.

    • 6

Click “Create” or “Save As” to create the .torrent file. Upload the .torrent file to your file-sharing community's website to make it available to other users. When another user downloads your .torrent file, the .torrent file will upload from your BitTorrent client to share the file's contents.

Tips & Warnings

  • Distributing copyrighted materials through peer-to-peer programs such as BitTorrent clients is illegal. Only use .torrent files to distribute material you are allowed to legally share.
