Instructions

    • 1

Disassemble your bed into its component parts.

    • 2

Place all hardware (screws, nuts, bolts and washers) into the Ziploc bag.

    • 3

Take several cardboard boxes place them on your headboard so the entire headboard is covered with a single layer of box. Tape the boxes together, putting tape only on the boxes (the tape may mar the finish if applied directly to the headboard.)

    • 4

Fold eight to ten sheets of newspaper until they are roughly the size of a hardbound book. Wrap the bundle over a corner of your headboard and tape it in place. Repeat for the other three corners. If your headboard is a design with more than four corners, do this for every corner of the headboard.

    • 5

Repeat steps three and four for the footboard of your frame.

    • 6

Take the bed runners (the long, thin pieces the mattress actually rested on) and lay them side by side.

    • 7

Bundle the runners together. Wrap the bundle in eight to ten layers of newspaper and tape in place. If your runners are made of finished wood (rather than raw wood or metal, which is common), you may want to wrap them individually as well to prevent scratching during the move.

    • 8

Contact at least three shipping companies. You can get contact information from the internet, or get references from friends. Get estimates for shipping your bed from each.

    • 9

Choose one of the companies, with price being your major concern. As long as the company is bonded, you have little to risk. If they damage or lose your bed, their insurance will take care of you.

    • 10

Arrange for at your door pickup from the shipping company. This is a common free or inexpensive service for domestic shipping and will save you a lot of effort.
