How to Install a Scope on a Mosin-Nagant

The Mosin-Nagant rifle is a firearm that has been used in the Russian military since the late 1800s. It has a bolt-action feed, which draws ammo from an internal, non-detachable magazine. Throughout the years it has gone through many incarnations and been produced in a variety of countries besides Russia, including Romania, Finland and even the United States. Attaching a scope will give you increased accuracy at long ranges.

Instructions

  1. Preparing to Attach Your Scope

    • 1

Purchase the Mosin-Nagant scope mount. A brand called “Advanced Technology” produces a kit that will work universally for all models.

    • 2

Ensure the Mosin-Nagant is unloaded. Unlatch the bolt to check if you have a round in the chamber. If it is empty, then chances are the magazine is empty as well, but just to be certain, beyond the chamber you can see if there are any rounds in the magazine.

    • 3

Remove the bolt from the barrel. After you are certain it is not loaded, pull up on the bolt and squeeze the trigger, at the same time pulling the bolt out the back end.

    • 4

Remove the barrel from the stock. After the bolt is removed, the barrel should slide out the back end as well.

    • 5

Clamp the scope mount to the barrel. Align the front end of the scope mount, which is holes-forward, to the front face of the receiver ring. This is the section in front of the bolt action.

    • 6

Double check to ensure the mount is placed correctly. The incorrect placement can be extremely dangerous, so ensure that it is aligned correctly. This should make sense visually, with the end of the mount lining up with the receiver ring perfectly.

    Attaching the Scope

    • 7

Use the drill to mark the rear screw hole. Using the #11-sized drill bit, make a mark in the middle of the rear screw hole. This will act as a guide for the smaller drill bit.

    • 8

Drill the rear screw hole. Using the smaller sized #21 drill bit, drill a hole with the mark that you just created. You do not want to drill all the way through into the chamber. Keep the clamps on during this process and use the cutting oil to help with the drilling, which should be very slow. Repeat this step for the front hole.

    • 9

Insert the screw into the rear screw hole. After cleaning the area, insert the 10-32 by ½-inch screw. Repeat this step for the front hole.

    • 10

Remove mount from barrel. Clean all areas thoroughly and ensure that the mount holes have not penetrated the inner barrel before reattaching the scope mount. Secure it into place with the aid of Thread Lock used on the screws.

    • 11

Reassemble your chamber. Place the barrel back in the stock and reinsert the bolt included in the scope kit into the barrel. Do not insert your old bolt, as it will not work with the new attachment.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be cautious not to drill too far, piercing the inner barrel.
