How to Install a Cartridge in a Grease Gun
A grease gun is a necessity in any handyperson's garage. Grease guns are either manual or pneumatic. Although you can load a grease gun with bulk grease, it is often less messy and less hassle to install grease cartridges into your gun. The installation of a grease cartridge is the same whether you have a manual or pneumatic grease gun. Grease cartridges are available at home improvement centers. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Disconnect the air hose from the grease gun if you are changing grease in a pneumatic grease gun. Grab the head of the grease gun with one hand and grab the canister tube with your other hand. The canister tube is the piece where the cartridge sits, and the head is the trigger portion of the gun. The procedure is the same whether you are working with a pneumatic or manual grease gun.
-
2
Turn the canister tube counter-clockwise to disconnect the tube from the head. Hold the canister tube with one hand and with your other hand pull the plunger out as far as it will go. The plunger is on the bottom of the canister and has a “T” handle.

3
Turn the canister upside down over a trash can and allow the empty cartridge to fall into the trash can, if there is a cartridge currently in the grease gun. Insert the open end of the cartridge into the canister tube. All cartridges come with one end open and the other end has a cap with a pull tab, much like old soda cans.
-
4
Pull the tab on the cartridge and remove the cap from the cartridge. Thread the canister tube into the grease gun head until the tube is tight. Press the plunger release valve that is at the base of the plunger with your finger and press the plunger down until you meet some resistance.
-
5
Squeeze the trigger on the grease gun until you begin to get grease out of the tip of the nozzle. If you have a pneumatic grease gun, you will have to reconnect the air line to the grease gun.
