How to Find Vocal Harmony Parts to Go With Guitar

Vocal harmony consists of one or more notes that blend with the main vocal part of the song, known as the melody. Harmony adds texture and richness to a piece of music. If you're playing a guitar and trying to find vocal harmony notes for a song, you can locate the notes on the guitar itself, within the chords played on the guitar.

Instructions

1. Strum the guitar and listen to the notes within the chord you are playing.

2. Pick each string of the guitar individually as you continue to hold the chord.

3. Hum the same pitch that you hear for each string.

4. Listen for the pitches that are different from the melody line. For instance, if you are strumming a G chord and the note for the melody is D, all the other notes in the chord (primarily G and B notes) are harmony notes.

5. Assign harmony points according to natural vocal range. If you are working with a group, have individuals with higher voices, such as sopranos, sing the higher harmony notes and singers with lower voices, such as basses, sing the lower harmony notes.
