How to Repair Asphalt Shingles With Tar

Asphalt shingles are a widely available and popular roofing material for both businesses and homes. Their exposure to the weather, however, leads to cracking and curling. With a roofing adherent or tar, you can easily seal the shingles and make your repairs. Learn how to properly seal the shingles and restore the roof.

Things You'll Need

• Roofing adherent (tar)
• Caulking gun
• Putty knife
• Shingle granules

Instructions

1. Cut the tip of the roofing adherent (tar) with a utility knife at a 45-degree angle.

2. Insert the roofing adherent into the caulking gun and prime the gun by pressing the trigger once.

3. Lift the cracked shingle with a putty knife.

4. Lay down a thick bead of the tar under the cracked shingle.

5. Press the shingle onto the tar.

6. Lay down a second bead of tar on top of the cracked shingle and smooth over with a putty knife.

7. Hide the repair by sprinkling asphalt roofing granules on the tar. Collect these from the rain gutters on the roof.
