How to Be a Home Typist With No Fees
Advertisers who claim that you can earn astonishingly large income as a home typist often want you to pay large fees to find out how to do so. Only after you take the bait do you discover that all you get in exchange is generic advice and perhaps a few job listings. If you are a fast, accurate and reliable typist, you need pay no fees to establish yourself as a home typist. One method is to find freelance employment with a transcription service.

1
Test your typing speed with typing software or the Addictive Typing Lessons add-on for the Firefox browser. A legitimate transcription service will test you to make sure that you can type a certain minimum words per minute, perhaps 75 wpm, with high accuracy.
-
2
Download and learn to proficiently use a standard transcription software, including Express Scribe. Purchase a foot pedal to hook up to your computer if you are more comfortable using a foot pedal than key combinations to control audio playback speed and other functions.
-
-
3
Investigate reputable transcription services that might assign work to a home typist. The NCH site lists by region those transcription services that use Express Scribe, including Legal for Less and Star Transcriptions. The Transcription Registry is a more general directory of transcription services (See Resources).
-
4
Visit the website of a transcription service that you want to work for. Look for detailed, clear, grammatical explanations of procedures, supported formats, business history, turnaround time, terms of service and prices.
-
5
Check the Better Business Bureau to see whether any significant complaints have been lodged against the transcription service.
-
6
Contact the transcription service by phone or email to ask whether the company works with freelancers and would be open to a job application. If so, submit a resume and cover letter emphasizing your typing skills, any editorial skills, and educational background. Note whether you are especially well-qualified to specialize in a particular area (e.g., medical transcription).
-
7
Take the service's typing and transcription tests. Follow instructions as precisely as you can. Customers often have special requirements for a transcription job, and the company will want to know that, as a freelance transcriber working from home, you'll be conscientious about meeting them.
