How to Clean Felt Puppets
There is no need to throw out a felt puppet that has become soiled. Felt is very temperamental fabric and can be easily damaged by many cleaning methods, but it can be cleaned with minimal or no damage as long as you know how to clean it properly. To properly clean felt, you will need to know how to clean it without using a washing machine or other harsh methods, such as scrubbing.

- Soft bristled brush
- Sponge
- Mild laundry detergent
- Dry towel
- Fabric shaver

Remove surface dirt or dust with a soft bristled brush. Brush gently over the entire surface of the puppet to remove any dirt that has worked itself into the surface of the felt.

Inspect the puppet for stains or ground-in dirt.

Wet a sponge with cold water and a drop of laundry detergent.

Blot the puppet only on the stained areas with the sponge.

Rinse your sponge thoroughly, and blot the stained area again to remove the detergent.

Press firmly on the wet area of the puppet to blot off the excess water.

Allow the puppet to air-dry completely. If you see signs of damage (balls of felt over the surface), use a fabric shaver to remove them.
