How to Change a CPU Fan on a Gateway

How to Change a CPU Fan on a Gateway thumbnail
You can easily replace a Gateway computer's CPU fan if needed.

The CPU fan on a Gateway computer plays an important role, helping the CPU's heat sink cool the processor and avoid overheating. The fan distributes the heat into the air, where case fans can remove it from the interior of the computer's case. When a CPU fan doesn't function correctly, system instability and even hardware damage can occur. You can easily remove and replace a faulty fan, however, so long as the new fan is compatible with the processor type and the Gateway hardware.

Things You'll Need

  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Replacement CPU fan
  • Thermal paste
  • Thermal paste remover

Instructions

    • 1

Shut the Gateway computer down, then unplug it and remove all cables and peripheral components connected to the computer. Press and hold down the power button to discharge any power that may remain in system components.

    • 2

Remove the screws from the back of the Gateway case in order to remove the case's left side panel (or the full-case cover, depending on the design of the computer case); the screws will be located along the edge of the case where the panel/cover overlaps slightly with the computer case. Set the removed panel or cover aside, then lay the computer on its side so that the left side is exposed and the motherboard is accessible.

    • 3

Locate the CPU fan, which should be attached to a heat sink near the upper portion of the motherboard (the exact location may vary depending on the Gateway computer model that you own.) Carefully unplug the CPU fan's power cord from the motherboard.

    • 4

Use the flat-head screwdriver to pry free the tension bar that runs through the CPU heat sink and helps to hold the heat sink and fan in place; the bar will connect on both sides of the processor and have a slot designed for a screwdriver to be inserted for this purpose. Use the Phillips screwdriver to remove the screws that secure the fan or the flat-head screwdriver to release any locking tabs, depending on the computer model and the fan hardware.

    • 5

Remove the fan and the heat sink from the case, lifting carefully in case the processor sticks to the heat sink. Apply two or three drops of thermal paste remover and then carefully wipe the processor clean using a dry cloth. If leftover thermal paste is still visible, apply more remover and repeat the process until you can no longer see any of the dark gray or black paste.

    • 6

Place a drop of thermal paste on the CPU according to package directions. Lower the heat sink and new fan in place, letting it spread the thermal paste between it and the processor.

    • 7

Screw or lock the new fan and heat sink in place.

    • 8

Plug the new fan into the motherboard where the previous fan connected, then set the computer case upright. Replace the left side panel or case cover.

    • 9

Plug the Gateway computer back in, then press the power button to boot the operating system. The new fan should begin working as soon as the computer is turned on.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't use too much thermal paste or it will cause higher CPU temperatures.

  • Remain in contact with a metal portion of the case when working inside of your Gateway computer, as this will keep you grounded and prevent static discharge, which could potentially damage the motherboard or other sensitive computer components.
