How to Add a Linksys Wireless G Broadband Router to an Existing Network

Wireless networks are quickly becoming a standard of home networking.

There are several reasons for connecting a second router to your network. If you previously had a wired network, the easiest way to add wireless capabilities is to add a wireless router to your current network, minimizing the changes you have to make to your current setup. If you already have a wireless network, adding a second router can improve the range and speed of your network.

Instructions

1. Use an Ethernet cable to connect your computer's Ethernet port to one of the LAN ports on the second router (the one you want to add to the existing network). This should be one of the ports labeled 1, 2, 3 or 4 on your Linksys Wireless G Broadband Router.

2. Open your computer's browser and navigate to the URL 192.168.1.1. Log in to the router by leaving the user name field blank and entering "admin" as the password. This should open the router configuration page.

3. In the purple bar of menu links near the top of the page, click on "Advanced Routing." When this page opens, find the setting labeled "NAT" and select "Disabled." Click "Save Settings" at the bottom of the screen.

4. Click on the "Basic Setup" link in the purple bar near the top of the screen. Find the setting labeled "IP Address" and change it from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.2. Find the setting labeled "DHCP Server" and select "Disabled." Click "Save Settings" at the bottom of the screen. Your new router should now be configured.

5. Remove the Ethernet cable from your computer and connect it to a free LAN port on your existing router. Make sure the other end of the cable is still connected to one of the LAN ports of your new Linksys router.
