The GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP) is an extensive graphics application that includes multiple photo-editing tools. GIMP is free, open-source software that you can download and install on your Windows, Mac or Linux operating system. Most Linux distributions include GIMP.

      Start GIMP to display a Toolbox window on the left side of your desktop and a GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP) window at the center. In the GIMP window, click "File" to display its menu and then click "Open" to display the Open Image window. Navigate to the photo that you plan to edit, and then double-click on it to display it in the GIMP window.

      Edit the composition of your photo. Click "Tools," select "Transform Tools" to display its menu and then click on any tool. For example, you can click "Crop" to display a mouse pointer that lets you define the rectangular crop field. After you define the crop field, press "Enter" to display only the cropped area.

      Edit the colors of your photo. To edit the colors automatically, click "Colors," select "Auto" to display its menu and then click on any tool. For example, you can click "Color Enhance" to increase the saturation range of the colors. To edit the colors manually, click "Tools," select "Color Tools" to display its menu and then click on any tool. For example, you can click "Hue-Saturation" to display a window that lets you adjust colors with sliders.

      After you finish editing your photo, click "File" and then click "Save As" to display the "Save Image" window. In the "Name" field, type a new name for your edited photo, click "Save" to display the "Save as" window and then click "Save" to save your edited photo.

      Click "File" and then click "Close" to close your edited photo.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you want to cancel any edit, press "Ctrl" and "Z."

  • GIMP can seem complex because it is powerful. Therefore, be patient with yourself while leaning to use it. Focus on only the tools you need.
