How to Change the RAM on a MSI GX700 Notebook

This is what laptop/notebook RAM looks like.

If you have problems with speed and notice that your memory fills up rapidly on your computer, even without many programs open, it's definitely time to upgrade your RAM. If you don't have enough RAM to fulfill all the memory requirements of all the programs you run, your computer starts to occupy virtual memory on its hard disk, which accesses memory much more slowly.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the battery from your notebook and unplug it from the wall. This helps you prevent electrocution or damage to your machine.

    • 2

Flip your notebook upside down and look for a small compartment with screws in it. On an MSI GX700, this should be a compartment no larger than your hand to the opposite side of the battery at one of the extremes.

    • 3

Remove the screws from the compartment with a screwdriver and slowly open the panel.

    • 4

Remove the packaging from your stick of RAM and place the shiny metal part of the RAM to the mouth of one of the free slots of the interior of your notebook at an angle of about 30 to 40 degrees. This doesn't need to be absolutely accurate.

    • 5

Slide the RAM in until it catches on. If you feel some resistance and the tendency for the RAM to lower itself from the angle, just keep following along until it lays down at the angle it fits most snugly in.

    • 6

Wobble the stick around a little gently to make sure it's firmly in place. If it wobbles, push it in further into the slot with a bit more force than you did before.

    • 7

Place the compartment's panel back on the compartment and screw it in tightly.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not, by any means, apply too much force on any of the interior components of your notebook. The amount of force you should use is the same force you would require to close a rusty door.

  • Do not ever put anything besides your fingers inside of the interior of your computer unless you are absolutely required to do so. Installing RAM doesn't require the use of anything but your fingers on the interior. Using any harsh metal tools might damage some of the delicate components inside.
