Insurance is regulated at the state level, and every state has slightly different rules and regulations regarding the method in which you can get an insurance producers license. Every state will require you to pass an exam that tests your knowledge and comprehension of that state's laws and general industry guidelines. Some states, like Pennsylvania, have additional requirements that must be met prior to obtaining a life and health insurance license.

Instructions

  1. Pre-Licensing Education

      Open your Internet browser and navigate to the Pennsylvania Insurance Department's Sircon educational website. This website contains extensive material for currently licensed insurance producers, as well as generic material for consumers and would-be producers. Click the button labeled "Look up education courses/credits" located on the left-hand side of the website.

      Select your state and status. On the next page that appears, click "Approved Courses Inquiry" and choose "Pennsylvania" from the drop-down list on the next page.

      View and select courses. From the drop-down list on the following page, change Education Type to "Pre-Licensing Education" and click the "Submit" button the view a list of approved pre-licensing classes. The Pennsylvania Insurance Department requires you to successfully complete 24 hours of pre-licensing education, but allows you to choose the manner in which you fulfill this requirement. You may elect to attend classroom sessions with other future life and health insurance producers, or you may purchase course material to study at your own pace.

      Complete the educational requirements. From the list of available pre-licensing courses, click the name of the provider in the header above the course description to view contact details. Call the telephone number listed, or visit the website address of the company that can provide you with the material for your chosen course.

      Get your certificate of completion. When you complete the educational requirements, obtain a certificate of completion from the provider of the course and bring it with you to the state examination testing center.

    Taking the Examination

      Schedule your exam time. Contact the nearest Prometric testing center, or visit the Prometric website to find the phone number of a nearby testing location. Inform the scheduling department of your need to sit for the Pennsylvania life and health insurance producers exam. Provide the scheduling department with your name, telephone number, and any other vital information they need to schedule your examination.

      Pass the exam. Arrive at the Prometric testing center at least 15 minutes early to account for the need to sign in, verify your identity, and prepare the computer for your examination. Give your pre-licensing educational completion certificate to the administrator of your exam. Answer the questions on the exam to the best of your abilities within the time frame provided.

      Get fingerprinted. Upon your successful completion of the Pennsylvania life and health insurance producers exam, you will be required to have your fingerprints taken. Your fingerprints will be stored by the Pennsylvania insurance department. There is a nominal fee for the processing and safekeeping of your fingerprints, and this will be required at the time of your exam at the Prometric location.

    Getting the License

      Visit the Pennsylvania insurance department website. Using your computer's internet browser, navigate to the Pennsylvania insurance department's Sircon website and click the "Apply for a license" button on the right-hand side of the page and indicate your status as a "Resident" and "Individual."

      Provide your information. Enter your last name and Social Security number on the following page, then indicate your payment method at the bottom of the screen and click the "Continue" button.

      Pay the fee. Fill in your credit card information into the required fields, then click the "Submit" button to initiate the processing of your Pennsylvania life and health insurance producers license. Your credit card will be charged the Pennsylvania state licensing fee, as well as a small convenience fee charged by Sircon.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you already have a life and health insurance producer's license in another state, you can obtain a Pennsylvania non-resident producer's license by visiting the insurance department's website and following the links for "Non-Resident Licensing."

  • Do not attempt to sell insurance in Pennsylvania, or any other state, until you have obtained the proper life and health insurance licenses. Severe penalties may be imposed on you if you're convicted of soliciting the sale of insurance products without a valid license.
