Nine foot ceiling are very common in new homes, it has become the standard to have taller ceilings, giving the room a more expansive look. The one problem that most builders did not take into consideration is the height of the windows. This luckily can be resolved with a window treatment that mounts several inches above the window and gives the illusion that the window is much taller than it is. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Install a working shade at least five inches above the window to create some height. Blinds and verticals are not recommended, just a solid shade, cellular shade or woven wood. A blind and vertical will show the wall up above when slats are open and will ruin the illusion of height.

Mount a valance up to the top of the ceiling or crown molding and have it come down into the window enough to hide the top of the window. The valance could be a mock roman, cornice box, balloon valance or pleated valance.

Build a substantial frame around the window, adding height to the window, and then install a shutter, wood blind or other hard treatment in the window box.

  • All of these ideas are about giving the illusion of height to the window in order to narrow the gap between the top of the window and the ceiling.
