How to Clean or Refinish a Bathtub
Refinishing a bathtub is sometimes necessary when mere cleaning isn't enough to brighten up an old tub. Refinishing involves the removal of the damaged exterior and the application of a new one. Bathtub refinishing kits are available in hardware stores and online and provide the main tools needed to resurface a worn out bathtub. Things You'll Need
- Cleaner
- Scrub brush or sponge
- Masking tape
- Plastic tarp
- Bathtub refinishing kit (cleaner, sandpaper, hardener, tray, brush, roller)
- Epoxy filler
- Putty knife

Use a household cleaner to clean any body oils, dirt or soap scum from the bathtub.

Tape off surrounding faucets, drains, fixtures and walls with masking tape and plastic tarps to prevent spilling in unwanted areas.

Sand the bathtub with 120-grit waterproof sandpaper to remove the veneer of the bathtub. Sand with warm water until the sandpaper is worn out. Wash off debris with warm water.

Fill in any holes or dents with epoxy filler and smooth with a putty knife. Let the epoxy dry for 24 hours.

Mix hardener according to the manufacturer's directions and pour onto a paint tray.

Use a paint brush to apply hardener in hard-to-reach areas such as corners, edges, drains and around fixtures.

Use a paint roller to apply the hardener to the rest of the bathtub's surface. Paint on multiple coats, letting each coat dry before applying the next.

Remove tape and plastic tarps. Let the bathtub dry for 48 hours.

Tips & Warnings
Wear a mask when sanding to avoid inhalation of debris. Work in a well-ventilated area when applying hardener.
