How to Replace Wheel Rims

How to Replace Wheel Rims thumbnail
New rims add style to a car.

A tire rim is the part of the car that holds the tire. In effect, the rims are the real wheels of the car. Enthusiasts often update their cars by adding custom chrome or carbon-fiber rims. If you are thinking of replacing the rims on your car, it is a do-it-yourself project. It does require special equipment and some expertise, but it is not difficult for the average person.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Use a car jack or hydraulic lift to jack up the car. Once the car is elevated, place car blocks under the chassis to support the vehicle. Use two car blocks to prop up the front end and four to prop up both ends of the vehicle.

    • 2

Remove the lug nuts on the rim using a tire iron or air ratchet. Turn the lug nuts left to loosen them and put them in a container. They will be used later to replace the rim. Slide the tire rim off the lug bolts once they are removed.

    • 3

Slide the new rim onto the lug bolts carefully. Attach the lug nuts to the ends of the bolts and tighten them with the tire iron or air ratchet. Work in a clockwise pattern, tightening the bolts as you work until all four are tightened.

Tips & Warnings

  • Properly size a rim before you purchase it. A rim will only fit certain-sized tires. An 18-inch rim, for example, will only fit 18-inch tires. The width of the rim is measured in inches. Most sedan rim sizes are 16 to 18 inches. Oversized rims are 19 to 22 inches.
