How to Use a Cell Phone's Web Service on a Laptop
With Internet cafes and all the other Wi-Fi hotspots, the Internet seemingly is ubiquitous; however, there are times and places where getting a connection through conventional methods is not always easy. Luckily you can get Web service on your laptop through your cell phone if you have a data plan and a USB cable. This way you can be connected anywhere you go.

1
Buy a USB data transfer cable. You can find these online at several retailers (see Resources) as well as at your local computer store. As of 2010, they cost $25 to $30.
-
2
Plug the USB end of the cable into your computer and the other end into your phone. Wait for a minute and you will get a "New Hardware Is Found" message on the screen.

3
Insert the disk that came with your kit into the CD-ROM drive and click on "Search CD-Drive." Click "Next." You will get an option that says, "Have disk." Click "Browse," find the driver for your phone then click "OK."
-
4
Click on the "Start Menu," go to "Settings," then to "Network and Dial-Up connection." Double-click on "Make a New Connection." You will see a "Connection Wizard" that will help you create your new connection.
-
5
Click "Dial-up to the Internet." Choose "I want to set up my Internet connection manually." Click "I connect through a phone line and a modem." It will then ask you to "Select a modem to use to connect to the Internet." Scroll down and find your phone from the list. Type "#777" for the phone number and click "Next."
-
6
Enter your user name and password. This will depend on who the service provider is for your cell phone, and you will need to get this from them when you sign up for your plan. If you have a Verizon phone, it is "Web" for both the user name and password.
-
7
Make a name for the connection and click "Save."
-
8
Go to "Network and Dial-Up Connection" in the Control Panel. Find the connection that you've created. Click "Dial" and within about a minute you should be connected if you've entered your user name and password correctly. Open up your Internet browser and surf normally.
