How to Travel to Edinburgh, Scotland, With a Rail Pass From Rail Europe
Train travel is popular in Europe for many reasons: The trains are fast and prompt, they run often and go even to small towns, plus they allow you to see the scenery. Rail Europe caters to train travelers, allowing you to buy train passes for the many systems in Europe. No single pass works everywhere. Edinburgh, Scotland, for example, is served by Britrail.

Plan your trip itinerary. Rail passes serve limited regions, so you will need know where you will be departing from before heading to Edinburgh. The itinerary will determine which region's rail passes you need. This plan also will help you know how many times or for how long you will be using each pass.

Determine what your budget will be for the trip. Rail Europe sells passes for different accommodations: first class, second class, no assigned seat or sleeper. Each of these vary in price.

Go to the Rail Europe website. On the Rail Europe home page there is a link on the side that says "View All of our Rail Passes." Click on the link. Scroll down to the section titled Scotland.

Review the pass options to see what best fits your itinerary and price range. Examples of choices range from three-day travel to be used in one week. starting at $80, to one-month passes that cost about $1,100.

Review other areas in the United Kingdom where you might want to travel. The BritRail pass will allow you to travel to and from Edinburgh, all across the UK and in Ireland.

If you have an exact itinerary and money is less of an issue, go to the EuroRail home page and click on the link at the top of the page entitled "Tickets and Passes." Click on the link: "I Know the Cities Where I Want to Travel". Follow the instructions on the page. Look into the Multi City tab if you are planning to go to other cites besides Edinburgh.
