How to Install Myst on Windows XP thumbnail
Myst was once the best selling computer game of all time.

Released in 1993, Myst is a first person adventure/puzzle game that was once the best-selling computer game of all time and spawned many sequels and remakes that continue to be released today. Because of the game's age, you may find that it demonstrates unpredictable behavior or fails to run properly when installed on a Windows XP system. However, there are several steps that you can take to improve the way that Myst runs in Windows XP.

Instructions

  1. Installing Myst with Compatibility Mode

    • 1

Start Windows XP and allow the desktop to load. Insert the Myst CD. The installation program loads. Click "Install."

    • 2

Click "Next" through the installation prompts, then click "Yes" to copy the files to your hard drive. If you do not have QuickTime installed on your computer, you will be prompted to install it. Click "OK," then click "Install" and "Start."

    • 3

Skip the registration process, then click "OK" when the installation is complete. Click "Close" to return to the desktop.

    • 4

Click the "Start" button, then navigate to "All Programs" and "Broderbund Software." Right click "Myst" and click "Properties."

    • 5

Click the "Compatibility" tab. Place a check in the box labeled "Run this program in compatibility mode for" and select "Windows 95."

    • 6

Place a check in the box labeled "Run in 256 colors" and click "OK."

    • 7

Return to the "Start" menu and launch Myst.

Tips & Warnings

  • The steps in this article were tested with Myst version 1.3 for Windows 95. Many versions of Myst have been released, and these steps may not work with all versions of Myst.

  • Myst is bundled with an obsolete version of QuickTime, which is used to play videos in the game. If you experience a problem with video playback in the game and had QuickTime or iTunes installed before installing Myst, uninstall Quicktime, then uninstall and reinstall Myst. If you depend on QuickTime or iTunes to play media on your computer, however, this may cause media to play improperly on your computer or not play at all. If you have a Windows 95 or 98 CD, consider downloading the free VMware Player and creating a virtual Windows 95 or 98 machine on your computer instead. Myst can be installed on the virtual machine without making large changes to your computer.
