How Do I Calculate a College GPA

College GPA determines where you are accepted into graduate school and how potential employers view you as a job candidate. Each letter grade corresponds to grade points so that an A earns 4.0 grade points, a B earns 3.0 grade points, a C earns 2.0 grade points, a D earns 1.0 grade point and an F earns zero grade points. Some schools also use a plus/minus grading system, which assigns grades such as an A- or a B+. In this instance, you would add 0.33 grade points if you earned a "plus," or subtract the amount if you earned a "minus."

Instructions

    • 1

Convert each letter grade on your transcript to grade points.

For example, an A equals 4.0 grade points, while a C- equals 1.67 grade points.

    • 2

Multiply the amount of grade points by the credit-hours for each course to determine the grade points earned per course.

For example, if you took a four-credit hour physics class and earned a B you would multiply 4.0 times 3.0, resulting in 12.0.

    • 3

Add up the total grade points earned for every course you took in college.

    • 4

Divide the total number of grade points earned by the total credit-hours attempted to determine your cumulative college GPA.

For example, if you earned 500.0 total grade points while taking 130.0 credit hours of course work, you would divide 500.0 by 130.0, resulting in 3.85, your cumulative college GPA.
