How to Cancel an AT&T Wireless Contract
If you need to terminate your AT&T Wireless contract out of necessity or simply to move to a new cellular phone provider, AT&T will allow you to do so. As an AT&T Wireless member, you have the option of canceling your contract before it ends, and you can do so right over the phone in a matter of minutes. However, cell phone contracts are designed to keep customers, so in most cases your early cancellation will cost you.

Call the AT&T Wireless customer service line at 1-800-331-0500, or just dial 611 from your AT&T cell phone.

Press "5" to speak with a sales representative. You may have to wait several minutes before hearing a live voice.

Tell the representative that you would like to cancel your wireless service. For security reasons, she may ask you to provide personal information such as the last four digits of your social security number, so answer each question and then explain your reason for calling.

Pay the early termination fee. For early cancellation, AT&T charges a prorated fee of $175. So you will need to pay $175 minus $5 for each month since your contract began. For example, if your contract began nine months ago, you will pay $45 less than someone who just signed up.

You may be able to get out of your contract for free if you can wait until AT&T sends you its annual contract update. Each year AT&T updates its terms and fees and sends a notification letter to wireless users. This letter include an option to end your contract immediately.
