How to Replace a 1999 Ford Taurus Radio

DIN removal tools fit into the holes on either side of the stereo face.

The 1999 Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable came standard with an AM/ FM stereo with single disc CD player. Options for the Taurus sound system included multiple-disc CD changers. Taurus owners who need to replace their factory stereo or choose to upgrade their stereo with an aftermarket unit, can do so with the assistance of the Ford DIN removal tools. The specialized tools are available through a Ford dealer or car audio retail store.

Things You'll Need

• 10mm wrench
• Ford DIN tools

Instructions

1. Lift the hood of the Ford Taurus and disconnect the negative battery cable from the negative lead post of the battery with the 10mm wrench. Lay the cable away from the battery to avoid accidental connection during the installation.

2. Insert the Ford DIN removal keys into the two holes on either side of the stereo face. The holes are located just to the left and right of the preset buttons.

3. Pull outward on the removal keys while pulling the stereo from the dashboard of the Taurus.

4. Disconnect the wiring connected to the back of the stereo.

5. Connect the Ford stereo wiring to a wiring harness adapter.

6. Slide the aftermarket stereo into the Ford faceplate adapter.

7. Connect the wiring harness adapter leads to the back of the aftermarket stereo.

8. Slide the stereo, with Ford faceplate adapter, into the dashboard of the Taurus.

9. Replace the negative battery cable onto the negative lead post of the battery, and tightened the cable with 10mm wrench. Close the hood of the Taurus.

Tips & Warnings

• The unique faceplate of the Ford Taurus requires that you replace it with a faceplate adapter maid by Ford. Universal faceplate adapters are not sufficient substitutes.
