How to Make a Barbie Pinata

How to Make a Barbie Pinata thumbnail
Fill a Barbie pinata with candy for a little girl's party.

If Barbie is one of your little girl's favorite toys, use the fashion doll's likeness to create a Barbie piñata for your child's birthday party. Fill the piñata with wrapped candy treats. Give each child at the party a chance to swing a plastic baseball bat at the piñata in an attempt to break it open to release the treats. Blindfold each child before she takes a swing, or jostle the piñata up and down on a rope, making it a moving target.

Instructions

    • 1

Tear the newspaper into 1- by 6-inch strips. You need enough paper to cover a balloon three times. Tearing is preferred over cutting, as the paper will lay flatter on the balloon, compared to strips cut with a scissors.

    • 2

      Inflate a large, round balloon.

    • 3

Dip a newspaper strip in the liquid starch and pull the piece between two of your fingers to eliminate excess liquid.

    • 4

Affix the wet newspaper strip to the balloon. Repeat, adding newspaper strips to the balloon, in a crisscross pattern, until the entire surface of the balloon is covered, except for a 2-inch square section on the upper backside of the piñata. This will be used later to pop the balloon and add the treats. Allow to dry.

    • 5

Repeat steps three and four, coating the balloon two more times. Allow the paper to dry between coats.

    • 6

Print out a likeness of Barbie on a heavy piece of copy paper, using your home computer. The picture needs to be small enough to fit on the outside of the piñata, and large enough to identify the image. For an image, scan an existing image you have of Barbie or take a photograph of the doll.

    • 7

Cut paper into an oval shape, with the image of Barbie in its center.

    • 8

Glue the picture onto the outside of the piñata. Be careful not to get the image wet, as the ink may smear. Apply glue to the edges of the oval.

    • 9

Cut colored tissue paper into long 2-inch strips and make a series of cuts along one length of each strip to create a fringe. You will need enough strips to cover the surface of the piñata.

    • 10

Dampen the uncut edge of the fringed strip of tissue paper with liquid starch, and apply to the piñata, laying it horizontally at the bottom of the piñata. Continue adding strips, working from the bottom up. As you apply a new strip, the starch edge of the lower strip will be covered with the dry fringe from the upper strip.

    • 11

Cover the entire piñata with the colored tissue paper, except for the oval picture of Barbie. Allow to dry.

    • 12

Cover the bottom of the piñata, or any area where newspaper strips are visible, with torn pieces of colored tissue paper, dipped in starch. Allow to dry.

    • 13

Add a final tissue fringe around the oval picture, to create a decorative frame. Allow to dry.

    • 14

Cut two small holes in the top of the piñata to run a piece of twine through, to use for hanging the piñata.
