How to Replace a Typewriter Ribbon Cartridge

Electric typewriter

The electric typewriter first came out in the 1930s, but it did not become popular until the 1950s. Modern electric typewriters usually have typewriter cartridge ribbons and not manual spool ribbons. These cartridge ribbons make replacing a typewriter ribbon much easier than even replacing a printer ink cartridge in some cases.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the typewriter from the power source.

    • 2

Open the typewriter top cover to expose the cartridge.

    • 3

Release the latch that holds the cartridge in place and remove the cartridge from the typewriter.

    • 4

Put the new typewriter ribbon cartridge into place and press until it snaps down.

    • 5

Pull the ribbon out of the cartridge and place it in the hooks that hold it in place. Wind the cartridge so the ribbon is taut.

    • 6

Close the top of the typewriter.

Tips & Warnings

  • Put the ink ribbon with the color of ink you want to type in facing the paper when you place the ribbon in the hooks. If you want to type in black, the black ribbon should face the paper. If you want to type in red, the red ribbon should face the paper.

  • Be sure the replacement ribbon cartridge is the proper cartridge for your typewriter.
