Bookkeepers help keep finances organized for individuals and companies. They keep records of debits, deposits and additional financial transactions for their clients. Occasionally bookkeepers will also do their clients' taxes. Bookkeepers often have experience working as accountants or in other financial fields, but often bookkeepers are trained on the job. Independent bookkeepers charge $25-$40 per hour but their fees depend on their location, experience and the type of bookkeeping work they are doing.

1. Get an accounting or finance degree. This is not mandatory, but it will give you experience that will be beneficial in opening a bookkeeping business. It will also add to your credibility.

2. Buy a bookkeeping computer program. Pick a software that is simple to operate, cheap and works well with your computer. The program will allow you keep track of deposits and purchases easily.

3. Prepare an office where you can meet with clients. Make sure that your office has all the necessary office supplies you need such as a computer, phone, printer, etc. You will also need a comfortable chair for your client to sit in while you discuss business with them.

4. Find clients. Call up friends and family and ask if they or their companies need bookkeeping services. Encourage them to spread the word of your new business. Look on Craigslist for bookkeeper wanted listings and contact the ad poster.

5. Hire interns. Interns can help you complete your work and allow you to take on additional clients. Advertise your hiring needs in local universities so that your new employees can be paid in college credit and not money. Interview candidates and hire the most suitable ones.
