It's easy to record digital radio for playback on your favorite MP3 device.

Recording digital radio is fairly simple, as long as you've got the right hardware and software. In addition to an HD radio receiver, you'll need a digital recording device (like a PC or digital audio recorder), recording software for the device and an inexpensive cable to connect the two devices.

Things You'll Need

  • HD radio receiver with a 3.5 mm ouput jack
  • Digital recording device with a 3.5 mm microphone jack
  • Software for recording device
  • Mini stereo cable with a male stereo 3.5 mm connector on both ends

Tips & Warnings

  • If you're using a computer to record digital radio, consider using software that will automatically split the songs you've recorded into individual MP3 files.

  • Most computers and other digital recording devices will let you monitor the signal you're recording with headphones. This allows you to listen to the programming as you record.

  • Digital audio recorders usually have all the software they need built in, so you don't need to buy anything else.

  • Many digital recording devices and software allow you to set a time delay before you begin to record. This lets you record digital radio programs when you're away, so you can listen to them later.

  • While most hand-held and table-top HD radio receivers have an output jack, many HD car radios do not. Check to make sure your receiver has an output jack before you run out and buy a cable.

  • Certain MP3 devices use a special jack that combines input and output, so a standard stereo 3.5mm jack won't work with them.

  • Before you record, make sure you have enough space on your digital recording device to capture all the audio you want. You may need to adjust the recording settings on the device so the recording requires less space.

  • Selling or sharing the files you record from digital radio may violate copyright laws.
