How to Replace the Battery in an iPod 2nd Generation
An iPod is for many of us essential for listening to music, and even watching videos. Over time, the battery may not hold a charge as long as it originally did, and eventually the iPod may not even power on. If after trying to charge or reset the iPod there is still no power you will need to replace the battery. Your choices include paying possibly more than current second generation iPod replacement value to have a new battery installed, or doing it yourself.

Apple and a few other online sites offer to replace the battery for you at a charge. The charge for getting the battery replaced can be up to $180.00, and your iPod may be swapped out for a different one of the same generation entirely, forcing you to reload your music collection. Choosing to replace the battery will save shipping time and money. Replacement kits including special tools and a battery are available from a number of online sources.

Power down your IPod if it still has some power by pressing and holding the Play button, then engage the Hold switch button to keep it off. Use the tool provided in the iPod replacement kit to open the casing. Unlike the first generation iPod, the second generation model has a smooth cover that does not clip at the corners. Slide the flat end into the side of the iPod and carefully work it around the case to open it.

Remove the back plate to gain access to the battery, which will be directly accessible to you. Gently remove the piece of silver tape holding the battery. Lift the battery away from the iPod; at this point you will see the battery connector. The easiest and safest way to proceed is to lay the iPod face down on a soft, firm surface. There will be a silver tape holding the battery in place. Remove it gently with a needle nose pliers or with your fingernails.

4
Slowly pull the battery away from the body of the iPod until you can get a good hold on the battery connector. Pulling too hard on the cable can damage the hard drive connector. Set aside the old battery and connect the new battery from the iPod replacement kit.

5
Reconnect the silver tape to the battery to secure it to the body of the iPod. Make sure the connector from the battery is inside the casing then firmly place the back cover back onto the iPod. Charge your iPod and enjoy.
