1
Mark the patio location with a can of spray paint. Mark the area slightly larger than you expect so that you can accommodate the landscape edging.
-
2
Dig the patio area with a shovel. Remove any grass and other foliage. Dig the area 6 to 8 inches below the surface. This will help accommodate the gravel and sand beneath the patio pavers. As you dig the patio base, keep in mind that you will want the patio leveled on a slight angle. This helps water run off the top of the patio when it rains.

3
Lay down a fabric weed barrier on the bottom of the patio area. Once in place, lay down approximately 4 to 6 inches of gravel. Use a 2-by-4 to grade the gravel, keeping a slight grade away from the house or nearby buildings or driveways.
-
4
Compact the base of the gravel with a plate compactor. Lay down a ¼-inch layer of sand. Again grade the sand with a 2-by-4 board.
-
5
Install landscape edging along the edges of the patio.
-
6
Lay the patio pavers into place, leveling each paver into place as you go. When all of the pavers are in place, sweep sand between the pavers.
