Keep your card in a safe and secure place at all times. If you simply keep it tucked into your pocket or sitting out on your desk at work, you are setting yourself up for debit card theft, which may then result in fraudulent charges made on your account. If you must carry your card with you, keep in your wallet. When at work, lock up your wallet or purse in a secured drawer at your desk or in the trunk of your car to avoid theft.

Commit your PIN number to memory. You are handing a thief a virtual pass to your money when you keep a slip of paper in your purse or wallet with your PIN number on it. As soon as you receive the PIN for your debit card in the mail, memorize it. If you must write it down, do so on a slip of paper and keep it in an at-home safe or hidden place in your house. Never give your PIN to another person or say it aloud over the phone in a public place.

Check your account statements frequently. In fact, signing up for online banking means you can check your account daily and stop any fraudulent actions before they get out of control. Watch for any suspicious activity, and report to your bank immediately.

Be wary of entering your debit card information online. Only shop online at reputable sites, meaning they are major companies with a verifiable security certificate. Don't ever check the box allowing your information to be stored online and if you have a bad feeling about a site or unsure about your purchase, then don't provide your debit card number.

Read over receipts carefully and mark through blank lines on those from restaurants. This means that the final amount cannot be changed, preventing an individual from charging more than they should on your card. Make sure that the final tally matches up with what you think it should be.
