How to Improve Audio Computer Processing

How to Improve Audio Computer Processing thumbnail
Speed up your audio processing by closing out of other programs.

There are many different programs that allow you to work with audio clips (such as Pro Tools and Adobe Soundbooth). Although these programs don't use as much processing hardware as video editing programs, they can cause a lag in your audio processing. If you notice a slow down in performance, there are a few alternatives you can use to improve your computer's processing speed.

Instructions

Close all other programs running on the computer while using the audio programs. Audio editing programs can take up a large amount of RAM and having other programs running can take up needed RAM from the sound software.

Delete excess programs from your computer. If your computer hard drive is almost full, its computing speed is going to drop. Remove any old files and programs from the computer you no longer need. To remove files click the "Start" button, followed by either "My Computer" or "Computer." Select "My Documents," then choose any old files you want to remove and press the "Delete" button. To remove old programs click "Start," "Control Panel" and "Add or Remove Programs" (simply "Programs" in newer versions of Windows). Scroll through the list of programs until you find one you want to remove, select it, then click "Remove." Answer "Yes" to the prompt window and the program will be removed from your system.

Look through the user manual of your audio software to see what the required hardware is. Make sure your hardware on the system is higher than what the requirements are. If you are not sure of your hardware properties, click "Start," "Control Panel," then "System." The window that pops up will show you details about your computer system.

Process one sound file at a time. Having multiple sound files open at the same time can reduce the computer processing of the audio program.
