A Trojan horse can be used to steal your identity.

A Trojan horse is a malicious program that disguises itself as a legitimate software program available for download. A Trojan horse is different from a virus in that a Trojan horse cannot copy and spread itself. Nevertheless, a Trojan horse is extremely dangerous because it can be used to record personal information on your computer and communicate it to a remote hacker. Consequently, it is important to remove a Trojan horse from your computer as soon as possible.

Instructions

  1. End Associated Processes

    • 1

Hold down the "Ctrl," "Alt" and "Delete" keys.

    • 2

      Click on the "Task Manager."

    • 3

      Click on the "Processes" tab.

    • 4

End all processes associated with the Trojan horse virus. To end a process, right-click on it and select "End Process." To determine if a process is associated with the Trojan horse virus, type the name of the process into the Process Library (see Resources section).

    Delete Associated DLL Files

    • 5

      Click on the "Start" menu.

    • 6

Type "cmd" into the open box and click "OK." The Command Prompt window will open. (If using Windows XP, click on "Run" and then type "cmd.")

    • 7

Type "regsvr32 /u SampleDLLName.dll" into the Command Prompt window and press "Enter." Note that "SampleDLLName.dll" should be replaced with the name of the Dynamic Link Library (DLL) file that is associated with the Trojan horse virus. You can find this information by typing the name of the virus into a search engine.

    Delete Associated Files

    • 8

      Click on the "Start" menu.

    • 9

In XP, click on "Search Files and Folders." If using Windows Vista or Windows 7, click on the "Search Programs and Files" box at the bottom of the "Start" menu.

    • 10

Search for and delete the files associated with the Trojan horse virus. Generally, the files associated with a virus will have the same name as the virus followed by, or proceeded by, a series of random letters and numbers. Find this information by typing the name of the virus into a search engine.

Tips & Warnings

  • In addition to the steps above, it is important to run your antivirus program. This will help detect and delete any infected files you may have missed.
