Cars are repossessed for non-payment of the loan.

If you want to report a car to be repossessed in Florida there are a few simple steps to take. Normally, a car owner does not want the vehicle to be repossessed, however in some cases this is the only solution for them. If the owner has a very large car payment and is under water on their loan--meaning more is owed than the car is worth--the person may voluntarily report the car for repossession. Typically, this will only work if you are already behind on your payments.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate your lender contact information which is usually located on your loan statement. Contact the lender during business hours and ask to speak to a representative that handles repossessions. If you are banking with SunTrust one of Florida's biggest lenders, visit the website at suntrust.com and click the borrowing tab, then scroll down to automobile loans.

Tell the lender that you will not make your car payments and wish to have the vehicle repossessed. Give them the location of the vehicle and their car's information if they ask for it. If you have changed your locks, inform the lender of this. Repossession men, possibly from Florida Locater Services in central Florida will have keys made for your vehicle using the key codes given to them by the bank in some cases, to have keys made for your vehicle.

Leave the car in the location you gave to the bank. This is probably your home address, or place of work. A repo man will contact you, or attempt to take the vehicle from your home without contacting you at all. If you give your lender a work address, make sure you have a ride home from work because your car may be taken at any time.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you feel your car has been repossessed illegally or by mistake, contact the police in your Florida county.
